Origin and history
Bred in 1951 by crossing Williams and Coscia, it’s grown mainly in Emilia Romagna, which is the ideal environment for growing it.
Fruit’s shape and size
The fruits are pyriform or truncated pyriform , medium/big sized.
Characteristics of ripeness of the skin, flavour and texture
Its skin color turns from green to yellow when the fruit is perfectly ripe. The skin is characterized by small pale green spots and sometime blush of red and pink if the fruits are directly exposed to the sun. Flesh is white and juicy, hard and resistant to wilting and handling. It becomes melting when fruits are ripe. It’s taste is fresh and delicious.
It’s the most “generous” pear. Santa Maria trees are strong, lush and usually produce a good amount of delicious and crispy fruits, rich in nutritional elements.
